Warming Up Into Character With Absolutely No Script
Pretty sure nobody in their right mind would attempt to run a marathon without warming up first and the same goes for VO. When it takes 144 muscles just to speak, your vocal chords deserve some attention too. Working your voice before the booth not only protects your voice, but can help you endure longer sessions and keep consistent character. Which, is huge. There are plenty of ways to get warmed up and into character with absolutely no script in hand. If you know your client or research their previous work you can assume pretty safely where you're going to land for your read. Maybe passionate, excited, warm, or intense. Find that space and read through it. If you're driving, read passing signs. Walking? A billboard. Home? The back of a coffee can or even a shampoo bottle while you're in the shower. If you don't have anything tangible to read, there is still hope. Count from 1 to 100 or recite the ABCs out loud. Do so emphatically and dig into that character you're prepping to perform. It's always about acting into your character no matter the content. Hope this little tidbit helps you on your own VO journey. Talk to you soon!
