Tuesday Talent Tip: Tommy C

Tommy C, One of Studio Center's Voiceover Talents, Shares Today's Tuesday Talent Tip

Ask Questions

Just because we've booked a gig doesn't mean our audition read is set in stone. Don't be afraid to ask questions. As they say, clarity is always key.

Sometimes, as a voice talent, we get copy that we understand outright with clear specs that we can execute at the drop of a hat. Sometimes, we might need help interpreting our script. There might be a phrase you haven't quite landed or a tricky word causing a problem. Take a breath, and ask a question.

For example, when reading clinical or geographical copy, it's alright to ask, "How is that word, city, or name pronounced?" Or when copy comes without specs you can ask, "What is the tone or mood of this?" There is nothing funnier than preparing to be smiley and happy when the tone is more sarcastic and witty. If you aren't sure about a read you want to give feel free to ask (if appropriate), "Can I give you two options on this?" With this question, not only are you looking for clarity but you're giving the client more to work with, just in case they too are unclear.

If you can, ask as many questions before your session begins, but if there are things you're unsure about during the session don't hesitate to ask.

Remember, as the talent delivering the message, your goal is to make sure the story is properly told and that the message is successfully relayed. It's okay not to have all the answers upfront. The beauty of a great session is that with great direction, coupled with your own creative instincts, you'll end up with a masterful final product that you don't have to question.
