Tuesday Talent Tip: AI vs Real Emotions

Hone the skills that set you apart from AI!

Hi, my name is Paula H. I'm one of Studio Center's voiceover talents. Here's my Tuesday Talent Tip.

As a voiceover actor, you're well aware of other voices competing for the same jobs as you are, including those voices that don't belong to another person. Of course, I'm talking about AI. You may have won jobs based on the sound of your voice, your tone, and pitch. With AI's ability to generate voices with those types of characteristics, we need to remember and really tune into what sets us apart from artificial voices. AI voices can be sufficient for some purposes, but when the voice needs to sound realistic and convey complex human emotions, AI falls short. Unlike a computer, human beings are capable of feeling complex emotions, so we're able to convey those emotions in our voices.

To get to or to stay at the top of your game, set regular time aside to practice reading with various complex emotions and inflection. Things like empathy and cautious optimism can make a story or an ad much more relatable. AI has it's place, but we voice over actors can have the peace of mind that all the real feelings woven into our delivery not only add value, but also that "special sauce" a robot just can't deliver.

I'm Paula H with today's Tuesday Talent Tip.
